Scholarship Amount: $500. 1. The scholarship recipient(s) must be a high school senior in a WV school. 2. Applicants must have a 2.0 grade point average. 3. This scholarship must be used for tuition/educational expenses in any vocational, college or institution of higher learning approved by the Scholarship Committee. It may not be used for living or personal expenses. 4. The scholarship recipient may accept another source of financial aid or scholarship. 5. A high school transcript must be submitted with the application. 6. Scholarship Application must be received by December 31, 2021, preferably by email. 7. The final decision on awarding a scholarship shall be made by the Scholarship Committee comprised of members of the West Virginia PTA Board of Managers and PTA members from across the state. 8. Payment of the scholarship shall be in the form of a check made payable to the approved school to be used for tuition/educational expenses only. 9. Criteria for Selection of Scholarship Recipient(s): Overall quality of application, submitted materials, and following directions. Volunteer Service, Leadership, Honors Received, and Extra-Curricular Activities. Recipient(s) shall be selected without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability or geographical location. For more information and to apply now, visit mobile.westvirginiapta.org/scholarship.shtml The Underwood-Smith Teaching Scholars Program is a competitive scholarship for recent high school graduates with a passion for teaching and a history of high academic achievement, community service, and active involvement in extracurricular activities while in high school. Recipients will receive $10,000 per year for up to four years (up to the cost of tuition and fees, room and board, and other approved educational expenses). In exchange, Underwood-Smith Teaching Scholars must agree to teach in a West Virginia public school in an area of critical need (math, science, elementary education or special education) for a period of five years after graduating from college.
The scholarship may be used at any eligible West Virginia public or private, non-profit college or university offering West Virginia Board of Education-approved teacher preparation programs in math, science, elementary education, or special education. Each year, we will accept up to 25 new Underwood-Smith Teaching Scholars from a national applicant pool. The Underwood-Smith Teaching Scholars program has a 3-round application process. Those interested should submit an initial application by December 31, 2020. The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission is excited to announce the launch of a new scholarship program aimed at addressing critical teacher shortages in math, science, elementary education and special education. The Underwood-Smith Teaching Scholars Program will provide up to $10,000 per year ($40,000 total) to help highly qualified recent high school graduates become outstanding West Virginia teachers. Twenty-five recipients will be selected each year from a national applicant pool, with an additional cohort of twenty-five students added each year. Each Underwood-Smith Teaching Scholar will be paired with a professional teacher mentor, who will serve as an active member of the student’s support team. As a condition of the award, scholarship recipients will be required to teach in West Virginia for five years after graduation.
A preliminary application is now available on the program website – www.teachinwv.com – and only takes about 5 minutes to complete. Applicants who meet the minimum scholarship requirements will be invited to submit a full application, which will include a resume and essay. Finalists from this pool will then be asked to submit a short video demonstrating their passion for pursuing a career as a West Virginia teacher. Please note that the priority deadline for preliminary applications is December 31, 2019. 1. Students should be graduating seniors with a 3.0 on 4.0 scale or equivalent grade point average. (If transcript indicates a scale other than 4.0, student should have a minimum of 3.75 on a 5.0 scale, 4.5/6.0 scale, 5.25/7.0 scale, 6.0/8.0 scale, 6.75/9.0 scale or a 7.5/10.0 scale). 2. Students must be pursuing a degree at an accredited institution of higher education (i.e. Junior College, Community College, Technical College, College or University). 3. Students must support the preservation of the hunting tradition and actively participate in hunting sports. A copy of current hunting license is required. 4. Students must hold a current NWTF membership. 5. Students must be involved in school activities (i.e. FFA, Ecology Club, Science Club, Beta Club, Student Council, etc.). 6. Students must demonstrate ability as a leader among his or her peers. 7. Students must demonstrate community leadership and/or involvement (i.e. Scouting, 4-H, civic group or club, volunteer work). 8. Students must submit an essay exhibiting dedication to conservation (see application). 9. Three letters of recommendation must be attached to the application (i.e. teacher, counselor, community leader). 10. High schools/students must submit complete applications to the local chapter by January 1. The local chapter president’s name and address should appear on the application in the box provided. 11. Employees and board members of the NWTF and their family members are not eligible to participate in the program. Selection Process: 1. High schools/students will submit applicant names and qualifications on an official NWTF scholarship application, along with required attachments, to the local chapter by January 1. 2. Local chapters will forward winners to the state chapter president by February 1. 3. State officers will forward state winners to the NWTF headquarters by March 1, where the NWTF Scholarship Committee will select the National winner. 5. Winners may not be notified until their high school awards banquet, as many chapters like to surprise students. 6. The national winner will be asked to attend the National Convention the following year to be recognized. Scholarship Levels: Most Local Scholarship Winners will receive a minimum of $250. Most State/Provincial Scholarship Winners will receive a minimum of $1,000. The National Scholarship Winner will receive up to $10,000. Click here to apply. The US Senate Foundation awards $1,000 grants to incoming college freshmen. The grants are awarded on the basis of scholarship, a personal statement outlining the applicant's college goals, demonstrated leadership ability, financial need and other criteria. The applications are judged on a point system. Each point can make a difference in winning. It is important that students maximize each of their points in section VI, References. Completed application forms must be postmarked no later than January 5, 2017. Winners will be notified on or about April 15, 2015. See the guidance office for an application.
